jeremy nikel, msw, us navy


Mr. Jeremy Nikel is a native of Tulsa, OK.  He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1993 with a degree in political science.  He was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy simultaneously through the OU NROTC and was selected for flight training.  Mr. Nikel earned his Naval Aviator “Wings of Gold” in 1996 and was assigned to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light Four Two (HSL-42) out of Jacksonville, FL.  He completed two deployments, the second as the Assistant Helicopter Coordinator for NATO maritime forces during the Kosovo War.  Mr. Nikel flew over 30 combat missions during the Kosovo War, earning the Air Medal and two Navy Achievement Medals.  He also earned the Sikorsky Rescue Award for successfully conducting a life-saving rescue.

Mr. Nikels’s final assignment was as flight instructor with Fixed Wing Training Squadron Two Eight (VT-28) in Corpus Christi, TX.  He elected to leave the Navy after 10 years of active service and was honorably discharged at the rank of Lieutenant Commander (O-4). Changing directions in study, Mr. Nikel received his Masters of Social Work degree in 2011. He is currently a Graduate Research Assistant at OU-Tulsa.  He will graduate with his Master of Social Work.  He also volunteers on Tulsa’s Zarrow Symposium planning committee, and as Vice President, Board of Directors for SOS: Serving Our Servicemembers.
